Jerome Emiliani
(1481–1537)
   Order Founder, Philanthropist and Saint.
   Jerome was born of a noble family in Venice. After a short career as a soldier, he was ordained. He opened a hospital in Verona in 1518 and in 1532 he founded a society in the village of Somascia. This was to be an order of clerks who would dedicate themselves to the care of orphans. The Somaschi, as the members of the society were called, still carry out their work in Italy. Jerome himself was canonised in 1767 and nominated patron saint of abandoned children in 1928.
